The Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) consists of 17 Officers that provide specialized services in support of the Madison County Sheriff's Office mission. The main goal of SWAT is to provide protection and safety for innocent civilians and Department personnel while reducing the possibility of injuries or death at high risk incidents. Organizationally, SWAT is comprised of officers from different divisions within the agency. Every SWAT Officer has a primary duty at the Madison County Sheriff's Office, such as; Road Deputies, Patrol Supervisors, CID Investigators, Narcotics Officers etc. The Officer's assignment to SWAT is voluntary and is an additional responsibility to their normal duties.
MISSION:
The mission of the Madison County Sheriff's Office "S.W.A.T. Team (Special Weapons and Tactics Team) is to protect and safeguard lives during critical incidents by providing competent and effective public safety service to all persons with the highest regard for human dignity through efficient, professional, and ethical law enforcement practices.
The SWAT Commander is responsible for presenting tactical operations for the safe resolution of an incident. Additional responsibilities range from the selection and training of a SWAT Officer to maintaining administrative and logistical records. He attends training and assesses the team in all aspects of their performance. The SWAT Commander works closely with the Team Leader and Executive Officers to insure the team is equipped and ready to handle any situation that may arise.
The Team Leader is a senior SWAT Officer who has been selected to command the entry team in a high risk situation. Additional responsibilities range from the selection and training of SWAT Officers to inspection of weapons and equipment and any other responsibility given under authority of the SWAT Commander.
Team Member: An Officer trained in the use of special weapons and tactics who is utilized in various capacities which include: inner perimeter security, building entry and suspect apprehension, hostage rescue, team security, delivery of chemical agents, anti-sniper techniques, dignitary protection.
SNIPER TEAM: A SWAT Officer trained in the use of a scoped rifle, teamed with another member.
